The city of Rocky Mount has canceled its 43rd annual Independence Celebration scheduled for Thursday evening at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

City officials made the decision to cancel because of the threat of bad weather.

“We’ll probably have an end-of-summer celebration that will replace the Independence Celebration,” said Tameka Kenan-Norman, public affairs manager for the City of Rocky Mount. “We’ll definitely have fireworks.”

The city canceled the Independence Celebration last year because of rain.

“We still had the same crowd and the same excitement (at the end-of-summer event later),” Kenan-Norman said.

The time and date of the end-of-summer celebration will be announced in the coming weeks.
