Southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Roanoke Rapids have reopened following an early morning fiery crash involving an overturned lumber truck.
Authorities said the wreck happened around 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 173 when a vehicle drifted into the left lane and collided with a tractor-trailer hauling lumber. The driver of the vehicle was identified as a Tarboro man while the truck driver was employed by Advance Transportation, based in Goldsboro.
Police said neither man was seriously injured, but when the truck overturned, the lumber slid into the southbound lanes. A fire started and quickly spread to the spilled lumber, forcing crews to shut down traffic in the southbound lanes while crews worked to extinguish the blaze and clean up the mess.
The wreck is under investigation. Check back with the Rocky Mount Telegram for more information as it becomes available.
