A standoff betweem Rocky Mount police and an elderly man who has dementia ended peacefully Thursday afternoon.
Cpl. Mike Lewis said the unidentified man exited his home around 2:30 p.m., several hours after refusing to comply with orders from family and authorities to leave a house on the 100 block of Eagles Mere Trail. It is unclear what led to the incident. Authorities initially responded as if the man had a weapon, but police later said he was unarmed.
Lewis said the man’s family told officials they will take the man for a medical evaluation following the incident.
No one was injured during the incident, and charges are not likely against the man.
