BAILEY – After three games in the Big East Conference, Southern Nash found itself in dead last.

The Ladybirds knew they weren’t a last-place team, but they still needed a convincing turnaround.

That turnaround is becoming more convincing by the game.

Southern Nash needed only five innings to beat Northern Nash, 15-5, Tuesday at Southern Nash High School, invoking the 10-run mercy rule and winning their fourth straight league game.

With the win, the Ladybirds now sit tied for second place in the Big East Conference.

“I think certain people realized what position they play, and we all stuck to the same position to where we all got comfortable,” said Southern Nash shortstop Danyelle Noland, who reached base in all four plate appearances and scored four runs. “We started playing more with each other and got comfortable with each other, and everything fell into place.”

Southern Nash (5-10, 4-3) fell behind, 2-0, in the top of the first inning, but immediately took back the lead in its half of the inning.

Southern Nash’s first five hitters all crossed the plate, and the Ladybirds never trailed again.

For the Knights (6-7, 3-4), there wasn’t much positive to look to in Tuesday’s game.

“It started bad, and it stayed bad,” Northern Nash coach Greg Tharrington said. “We just weren’t ready.

“(Southern Nash) wanted it more and that was very apparent.”

Southern Nash tacked on another run in the second and three more in the third.

Northern Nash committed three errors and made numerous other fielding miscues that made life difficult on pitcher Shelby Godwin.

Godwin had to face all nine Ladybirds in two of her five innings.

Coming off spring break, Tuesday wasn’t what Northern Nash wanted to see.

“That week off just about killed us. That’s what it looked like, anyway,” Tharrington said.

For the Ladybrirds, the win was reassuring.

“We have two different teams,” Noland said. “We have a 15-5 team and the other team is the other way around. We just need to stay consistent.”
