BURGAW — A Pender County animal control officer says two pit bulls have been euthanized after the dogs jumped a fence and mauled a toddler.

A witness told animal control officers he was working on a car in his yard in Burgaw when he heard the child cry, looked up and saw a pit bull with the boy in its mouth.

The attack occurred Tuesday. The child is recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center

Pender County Sheriff's Office animal control supervisor Lt. Keith Ramsey said the N.C. State Veterinary Office ordered the pit bulls euthanized Wednesday and their remains sent to the state lab for rabies testing.

Ramsey said the dogs' owner, 70-year-old Wesley Lewis, was cited for multiple offenses. Lewis said the dogs dug under two fences and got out.
