The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at Englewood Baptist Church at 1350 South Winstead Ave.

The move comes in anticipation of possible power outages due to the winter storm as well as to possibly house travelers on Interstate 95 and U.S. 64.

The snow has turned to sleet, and Rocky Mount police are encouraging everyone to stay off the roads as conditions continue to deteriorate.

Classes were canceled for Thursday at Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, Edgecombe County Public Schools, Northeast Carolina Prep School, Rocky Mount Preparatory School and Edgecombe Community College.

Tar River Transit service and solid waste collection also has been canceled for Thursday.

The city’s Public Works Department is working to clear the roadways, and city officials ask motorists not to drive while plowing operations are ongoing and to refrain from parking cars on the roads in order to facilitate plowing operations, said city Public Affairs Manager Tameka Kenan-Norman.
