Local schools are canceling classes for Wednesday as another winter storm bears down on the area.

Classes have been canceled at Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, Edgecombe County Public Schools, Northeast Carolina Prep School and Rocky Mount Preparatory School for Wednesday.

Students in Edgecombe County were released from school at 11:30 a.m. due to the weather, public information officer Kristian Herring said.

Edgecombe Community College closed at 2 p.m. and evening classes were canceled, Director of Public Information Mary Tom Bass said.

All evening events for Nash Rocky Mount Public Schools were canceled as well, said Nash-Rocky Mount Chief Information Officer Ashley Simmons.

The area is supposed to receive at least a half an inch of snow mixed in with the rain, National Weather Service meteorologist Kathleen Carroll said.

In preparation for snow, sleet and freezing rain the Twin Counties is likely to receive Tuesday afternoon, the N.C. Department of Transportation began treating main roads, spokeswoman Marla Roth said.

A brine solution, which helps prevent ice from forming, will be used to treat interstates, highways, bridges and overpasses, as well as other primary routes, Roth stated in a press release.
