A Rocky Mount man is in critical condition after being shot several times in the head and body Monday during a home invasion.
According to police reports, Joseph Jerome Maxwell, 42, was at a home on the 500 block of Edgecombe Street with two other adults when two suspects broke into the residence, threatening the residents with handguns and demanded money.
One of the suspects reportedly fired at Maxwell multiple times. The suspects stole money, property and the house phone before fleeing on foot, police said.
Two of the residents, who were not injured in the assault, ran several blocks to the magistrate’s office to contact police.
Maxwell was taken to Nash General Hospital and flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
The suspects were wearing masks, gloves and dark clothing. No further description was available.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 977-1111 or crimestoppers@rockymountnc.gov.
