Duke redshirt sophomore forward Alex Murphy will seek a transfer, the school announced Friday.

Murphy played in 31 games as a freshman last season and averaged just more than two points per game, but playing time looked bleak for Murphy.

Fellow freshman forward Amile Jefferson emerged last season and became entrenched in the regular rotation by the end of the year. Forward Rodney Hood returned this season after sitting out one year due to NCAA transfer rules, and top recruit Jabari Parker, also a forward, arrived on campus.

Another top recruit at forward, Justise Winslow, will arrive in Durham for next season, as will top center Jahlil Okafor.

Duke said that Murphy, a former four-star recruit in his own right, is expected to transfer to another Division I school.

“I have enjoyed my time at Duke and am thankful for the support of my coaches, teammates and the fans,” Murphy said in the statement. "However, I feel that it is in my best interest to leave the program at this point. I have grown and developed on and off the court during my time in Durham and am excited about my future.”

The school did not say to which school Murphy would transfer.

“He is a top-notch young man and an excellent player,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in the release. “He comes from an amazing family and it was an honor for us to have him here at Duke. We wish him the very best and we always want to be a part of his future. We are friends and friends of the family and totally supportive of his decision.”
