HICKORY — Friends and family of Army Pfc. David Tyler Proctor are remembering the North Carolina soldier who died of noncombat injuries in Afghanistan as a patriot who wanted to serve and protect.

A funeral was held Friday for the 26-year-old Proctor, who died March 13 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

The military said Proctor was injured March 3 in Kandahar Province in a noncombat incident. He graduated from UNC Greensboro, and his family said Afghanistan was his first deployment.

About 100 people attended his funeral Friday at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory.

Proctor was based at Fort Stewart, Ga.
