A 22-year-old man was killed Wednesday night after a southbound Amtrak train slammed into a car parked on the railroad tracks between two crossing gates in the Battleboro community, Rocky Mount police said.
Justin Lamar Alston, 22, died at the scene after the train crashed into the car. Dallas Eugene Ford Jr., 25, a passenger in the car, was transported to Nash General Hospital. He was later airlifted to Vidant Hospital in Greenville where he is listed in serious but stable condition. A third person in the car, Donovan Jerel Tillery, escaped injury.
Police responded to the accident at the railroad crossing at Battleboro Avenue and Railroad Street about 11:45 p.m. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Rocky Mount police Cpl. Mike Lewis said Thursday he couldn’t say whether the car had stalled, but that is part of the investigation.
“Our preliminary investigation looks like the car was caught between downed crossing arms,” he said.
