Authorities are investigating a Wednesday morning traffic accident that caused the death of a pedestrian near Sharpsburg.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper K.B. Heath said Cassandra Wiggins-Peterson, 30, was walking on U.S. 301 South about a half-mile from Sharpsburg when she was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by Kevin Labad, 26.

"We don't know if she was crossing the street or walking down the middle of the road," Heath said. "She was almost in the middle of the travel lane when she was hit."

Wiggins-Peterson died at the scene. Heath said an investigation is continuing to determine if any charges will be filed.
