Authorities charged a Raleigh woman with driving while impaired in an early Wednesday morning crash that killed a Nash County woman.

N.C. Highway Patrol First Sgt. Jeff Gordon said around 2:30 a.m. Amanda Brooke Massengill, 21, of Bailey was in a Pontiac SUV driven by Lydia Marie Mills when the vehicle went off the right side of the road on Labrador Drive near Old Milburnie Road in Raleigh. According to reports, the SUV hit a tree before coming to rest in a ditch.

Massengill, who was in the front passenger seat of the SUV, died. Mills, 29, was treated and released from WakeMed. No one else was in the vehicle.

“We do believe alcohol was involved and speed was a contributing factor in the wreck,” Gordon said.

Mills was charged with driving while impaired, felony death by a motor vehicle, driving while license revoked and failure to maintain lane control. Mills was jailed in Wake County under a $350,000 secured bond.
