RALEIGH — Officials have released the name of a North Carolina man killed as winds from superstorm Sandy whipped through the state.

Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton said 25-year-old Jody Alan Davis of Mount Airy was driving a pickup Monday night about 7 p.m. when he struck a downed oak tree near Dobson. Davis was declared dead at the scene. Shelton said speed was not a factor in the wreck.

Also Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard recovered 42-year-old Claudene Christian, a crewman on the HMS Bounty, a replica 18th Century sailing ship that sank off the coast of North Carolina during the storm. The search is continuing at sea for Robin Walbridge, the ship's 63-year-old captain.
