A fundraiser is being held Thursday to benefit the family of a waitress who was slain last week as she was working at Westridge Grill.

Ten percent of Thursday’s sales at the restaurant and bar will be donated to the Cynthia Joyner Fund, which is at First South Bank and benefits the family. The fund is helping to cover funeral expenses and other family burdens.

Also, a raffle of items donated by local businesses is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. at the grill at 3629 Sunset Avenue.

People don’t have to be present for the raffle and can buy tickets today.

“I got here over 3,000 printed (raffle tickets),” Westridge Grill owner Mike Wise said. “We’d love to sell out of them if possible.”

Last Thursday, police found Cynthia “Cymp” Jeanette Joyner, 41, dead in the restaurant.

Police found the body of suspected shooter, Carlos Whitaker, in a wooded area behind the restaurant with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in what police said they believe was a domestic violence incident.

Wise said Wednesday that there has been an outpouring of community support to help Joyner’s family.

“I started making calls to people, and it spread from there,” Wise said. “There was an outpouring of people calling me back to tell me they were going to donate this or that (for the raffle). There has been unbelievable support from the community.”

Joyner had four adult children, her youngest being 18 years old.

Items being raffled off include cash; racing tickets; 15 tons of gravel; haircuts from Hair, Heart and Soul Salon and Total Image Salon; carpet cleaning; bedroom painting; pressure washing; and food certificates from Westridge Grill, Chico’s Mexican Restaurant, Italian Pizzeria and other eateries. Memorial T-shirts of Joyner also will be sold.

“(Joyner) was liked by all,” Wise said.
