A Rocky Mount man and his reported girflriend are dead after a suspected murder-suicide occurred today at Westridge Shopping Center, according to Rocky Mount police.
Police said Carlos Whitaker opened fire at Westridge Grill shortly after 11:30 a.m. Cynthia Jeanette Joyner, 41, died of wounds at the scene.
Police found the body of Whitaker behind the shopping center a short while later. Police say they suspect Whitaker died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing from the scene on foot after the initial shooting.

we know she was a good woman; from what you say he wss also a good man. Outside that they may have had relationship problems, does anyone know what happened to push Carolos over the edge to where he went in to shoot his wife? there's got to be more than it was just a domestic 'incident'. example, were there any people doing things that just helped push him over the edge? maybe you will know. We all have to wonder why a man would go in and do such a thing

This is so tragic, and Cynthia left behind children and family and apparently many friends who loved her. And I dont care what ANYONE says, good people don't shoot other people, especially ones they supposedly love...regardless of "whats going through their head" He was unstable and not a good person. Just ridiculous and absolutely sickening for anyone to disgrace Cynthia's name by excusing that man's behavior.

I still stand by thanking the RMPD "WowReally" and "Stan" for finding the shooter this morning even though he had apparently committed suicide. When I posted my earlier comment the story had not been updated. How sad to learn not one but two lives were taken. Prayers go out to both families regardless of the circumstances, as each family is without a loved one tonight.

I am very saddened to hear the terrible news about "Cymp". She was always very sweet and a hardworking woman. What also bothers me is the fact that this story will go largely unnoticed by anyone outside of Rocky Mount...why? Because it was a black woman killed by her black boyfriend. These types of crimes aren't sensationalized like the Zimmerman/Martin case. Let's be honest - Cymp was unnarmed too. She didn't deserve this, but no one like Al Sharpton or William Barber will take note of this case because they have nothing to gain by it.

Very Sad
This is very sad news. I love going to Westridge Grill. Everyone there is so friendly----especially Cymp. Just talked to her on Tuesday to let me know that Tuesday was now hot dog day. She will be greatly missed. God's Peace be with you Cymp.
Pitiful
No one forgets the lives that were lost. Of course people focus on the crime, because that is just what it was- a crime!! A terrible, sickening and pitiful crime that caused a beautiful lady to lose her life! She will be missed by MANY, no doubt about that, and our prayers go out to her family. I am very thankful the murderer is off the streets, unlike the many others that are still living life in the streets. Very sad it takes a suicide for RMPD to 'catch' them.

This was a tragic accident that the patrons that were there will never forget but as usual some are so focused on the crime--they forget that lives were lost. Whether the police captured him or he killed himself is not an issue --at least he is no longer a threat to anyone else.
