Two dogs were killed after a house caught fire Monday in the 100 block of South White Street in Whitakers.
The Whitakers Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene at about 10:30 a.m. and spent the next two hours fighting the flames, Whitakers Interim Chief of Police Darrell Cofield said.
The residents were not home at the time of the fire and are currently being housed by the Frederick E. Turnage Chapter of the American Red Cross, Cofield said.
Cofield said the residents had been notified before about the amount of clutter inside the home.
“One of the guys told me he was surprised they were even able to sleep, because there was so much stuff,” Cofield said. “He could not even get all of his equipment in there.”
The cause of the fire is currently unkown, and is being investigated by the Nash County Fire Marshal’s office.
