State NAACP leader the Rev. Dr. William Barber will be the keynote speaker this weekend at the Rocky Mount branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s 36th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet.
“The timing for our banquet is appropriate to mark the time in history when our N.C. General Assembly has adopted a vicious, mean-spirited and regressive budget,” said Andre Knight, president of the Rocky Mount branch. “Our banquet theme and speaker highlight the posture that progressive-minded North Carolinians must take.”
The banquet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thorne’s Chapel Life Center at 1624 Windsor Drive. In addition to Barber’s keynote address, special awards will be presented.
“‘Forward Together, Not One Step Back!’ is the theme that the Rocky Mount NAACP has adopted this year,” Knight said. “That statement was this year’s HKonJ’s rallying cry. We marched in February to the General Assembly to caution them against balancing the budget on the backs of the poor. But that is just what they did.”
