Rocky Mount police released a report Friday revealing factors believed to have led to the triple fatal car wreck last week in downtown Rocky Mount.
“The Rocky Mount Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Crash Reduction Unit’s investigation revealed that inclement weather, excessive speed and tire condition were factors in the crash,” a press release stated.
The results of toxicology tests on the victims conducted by the medical examiner’s office are pending.
Officials also determined through dental records that Jason Javon Britt, 29, was driving the 2001 Lincoln LS, which left the road around 2 a.m. on May 16 and collided with a brick building. The three men were killed when the vehicle burst into flames.
The vehicle’s owner, 27-year-old Kyol Allen-Gailliard, reportedly was sitting in the back of the vehicle while 21-year-old Dennis Ray Battle was in the front seat. All three men will be laid to rest today.
Linda Gilchrist, who is the aunt of Battle, cousin to Britt and great aunt to Gailliard’s two daughters, said her family plans to investigate the incident further, including who was driving.
“We are not at rest with the findings of the Rocky Mount Police Department,” she said.
