Edgecombe County Public Schools officials maintain the school district’s policy regarding student pick-up at bus stops had no connection to the death of Janell Simmons last week, but one school board member said she intends to re-examine the policy Monday.

What happened to this little girl is very sad and I hope that the family is slowly adjusting the best way they can. For us, we can learn a lesson from this tragedy so that it may never happen to our children. Watch...your....child! Too many times I go through neighborhoods where children as young as three are running from house to house or across the street without any parental supervision. I'm not blaming the family in this situation but want to express the need for parents to take an ACTIVE role in parenting and put up with being bothered watching and taking action where it is needed. No one will care for your child more than the parent. It's not the government's responsiblity, it's not the school's, it's not the neighbor's. It's your responsiblity. Please take this tragedy and honor the girl by taking more time out of your schedule and be a parent.
