Search and rescue officials Sunday morning recovered the body of an 18-year-old Edgecombe County resident who drowned in the Tar River during a Friday family cookout.

Kevin Jaimes was at a picnic with his family at Shiloh Landing when he slipped into the river, Edgecombe County sheriff’s officials said.

Jaimes went under and did not come back up. His friends and family tried to find him but couldn’t.

Several agencies responded to the scene to assist in the search-and-rescue mission.

By Saturday night, officials said the multijurisdictional search had become a search-and-recovery event.

An Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office press release states that Jaimes’ body was found by rescuers at 9:41 a.m. Sunday.
