There’s a market to support the construction of a multipurpose event center in Rocky Mount, a consulting firm has determined.

Got to be kidding !!

Oh yes, just what Rocky Mount needs; another empty venue to take tax payers money for nothing. This is truly about the most ridiculous idea conceived by the City of Rocky Mount. Exactly who do they think is going to be the first in line to buy tickets exactly for what kind of events. Let's just suppose a group like Aerosmith decided RM was a fit place for a concert, do they really think 5,000 sets would be enough to make it worth their while....., not a chance!! C'mon people, these kind of event centers only happen in thriving cities and especially thriving downtowns, neither one which can describe Rocky Mount. This is definitely a matter that should be put to the vote for us citizens to negotiate on whether it is yes or no and I pray it's no. Another big fancy building sitting empty in downtown RM. After all the fuss of dressing up downtown, I still see about a handful of people who are even willing to venture there. Now we do have the Dunn Center, and I don't think they can even fill that up for events, so what is this spectacular event center going to have going for it. This is a very BAD idea and they should put it to sleep ASAP!! And shame on our Mayor for cowtowing to all this ridiculous nonsense.

The Proof is in the Pudding

"The study concluded that the center probably would operate at an annual deficit that is projected to range from about $468,000 to $800,000 a year."

If the revenues for anything do not exceed the cost of providing it then the market is not right to provide it. It's true for any product or service.

WHY do politicians think its good business to lose money? WHY? because it's NOT their money. They know they can continue to tax, tax and more tax to FORCE people to pay for their wishlist.

When you can make a civic center profitable, build it! Till then, just wish.
