Scammers reportedly are using the recent cold snap to capitalize on utility customers, officials said.

According to a press release, scammers are threatening service disconnection unless immediate payment is received and offering customers the option to pay bills over the phone instead of venturing into the cold. Officials said customers who suspect they’ve received a call from a scammer should not divulge personal information, but immediately hang up.

Rocky Mount staff will not instruct customers to wire funds or pay bills at any retail outlets. Payments can be made online or by calling 866-288-7608.
