FAYETTEVILLE — Dozens of Cumberland County homes have unsafe levels of arsenic in their well water, and residents are told they shouldn’t use it for drinking or cooking.
Tests found water supplied to more than two dozen of the nearly three dozen homes in the Bullard Circle neighborhood just outside Fayetteville exceeded federal standards. Some wells showed arsenic levels more than 10 times the safe standard.
Ken Rudo of the state Department of Public Health said last week he believes the arsenic was naturally present in the ground water tapped by wells more than 200 feet deep.
The neighborhood is also near a Goodyear tire plant. Jim Barber of the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources said he did not know of anything in the tire-making process that would release arsenic
