RALEIGH — The University of North Carolina Health Care System will formally consider an offer by WakeMed Health & Hospitals’ to buy Rex Healthcare in Raleigh for $750 million.
A statement released by UNC officials indicates a committee will review the offer and report to the UNC board within six weeks.
The formerly independent Rex Hospital merged with UNC Health Care in 2000.
The committee is expected to make a recommendation to the system’s board of directors within six weeks.
WakeMed is a private not-for-profit hospital. Officials of WakeMed have expressed concern that the publically funded Rex and UNC Health Care System are expanding in more profitable service areas while leaving most of the area’s indigent care to WakeMed.
