ASHEVILLE — A 3-year-old girl has died and an Asheville city worker is hospitalized following a traffic accident in which a car became airborne and landed in a parking lot.

A police spokesman said 37-year-old David Jones of Mars Hill was injured in the wreck. His daughter, Madelyn, died Thursday morning.

A statement from the city said 41-year-old public works employee Bobby Edwards was injured and taken to Mission Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was listed in critical condition Thursday.

Police said Jones’ car rear-ended another vehicle Wednesday, then sped through an intersection and went airborne over an embankment. Jones’ car landed in the rear parking lot of the city’s public works facility, where it struck Edwards and another city worker.

An investigation into the crash is continuing.
