NEWPORT— A Texas-based company is abandoning plans to build a large wind and solar energy project in Carteret County.

Torch Renewable Energy won’t pursue the development of the Mill Pond Wind Project.

A Torch Renewable vice president said in a news release Friday that the Houston-based company realized it was unlikely to get a variance from the county’s ordinance for tall structures.

The project would have located an estimated 40 industrial turbines in the area. Residents and officials raised concerns about possible effects on military flight training at nearby Cherry Point as well as health and safety issues.

The county now has a moratorium in place on permits for wind energy projects as it reviews regulations for wind turbines.
