CHARLOTTE — A teenager from Mecklenburg County is facing at least 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his father and stepmother at the family’s home more than a year ago.
The Charlotte Observer reports 16-year-old Matthew Liewald pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of second-degree murder in the shootings of his 43-year-old father, Christian Hans Liewald, and his 24-year-old stepmother, Cassie Meghan Buckaloo. The shootings occurred in September 2011.
Matthew’s attorney said her client didn’t intend to kill anybody, but instead wanted to escape from his father, who he said would sometimes push him or hit him in the back of the head.
Mecklenburg Assistant District Attorney Bill Bunting told the judge that Matthew planned to kill his father and run away to Mexico.
