RALEIGH — Two assistant directors with the N.C. Division of Emergency Management are on paid leave as the agency investigates reports of nepotism.
WRAL-TV in Raleigh reports that records it obtained showed that the sons and daughters of two high-ranking and four lower-level employees got unadvertised, high-paying jobs to work disaster relief in 2011.
The division added temporary workers following the April 16 tornadoes and Hurricane Irene. Many of the disaster reservists are former state workers or people who have worked in disaster areas before. On the list of reservists were the names of employees’ sons and daughters who had no experience in disaster relief.
Emergency Management Director Doug Hoell issued a memo last month changing the agency’s hiring practices, saying a private company will now handle the division’s temporary needs.
