ASHEVILLE — Governors from across the South are set to hear strategies on how the region can close the gap when it comes to so-called “middle skills.”
Those are the types of trades that require a high school diploma but not necessarily a four-year college degree. Firefighters, nurses and computer support specialists are some of the people in the middle skills category.
Those jobs account for a huge percentage of the labor force, but many states in the South don’t have enough people with the appropriate training to fill them. On Sunday, a report on closing that gap will be presented to leaders from across the region.
Governors and other leaders are meeting in Asheville for the annual conference of the Southern Governors Association.
