SOUTHERN PINES — Police in Southern Pines have charged a man with first-degree murder after a slaying that became the focus of a town council meeting in January.

The Fayetteville Observer reports police also charged 22-year-old Je’Core Rayshad McKoy of Pinebluff with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. He is accused in the death of Maurice Donnell White, who was shot Oct. 27 in the parking lot at a pool hall.

McKoy is being held in the Moore County jail under a $60,000 bond. It couldn’t be determined if McKoy has an attorney.

More than 60 people attended a Southern Pines Town Council meeting in January to call attention to White’s death and four other killings in town. Last month, the state offered rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to arrests and convictions in White’s death and two of the other killings.

The other rewards are for information about the killings of Floyd “Bossie” Williams Jr. and David RaShawn Shaw.

Williams was 28 when he was killed June 29 in Southern Pines. Shaw, 28, was shot multiple times and found dead on a sidewalk in June 2012.
