SAWMILLS — The mayor of a small Caldwell County town says he regrets spending money from his father’s bank account on himself.

The News-Topic of Lenior reports that Sawmills Mayor William Robert “Bob” Gibbs III was indicted on 12 felony counts of forgery and uttering.

Authorities say he forged his father’s name on 12 checks worth nearly $12,000.

Gibbs told the newspaper he and his brother have power of attorney on the account. Investigators say the brother called police after noticing the checks.

Gibbs says he is going to try to work things out with his family.

City Councilman Johnny Williams says he has talked to about 50 residents since news broke, and they all want the mayor to resign.
