ROCKINGHAM — Sheriff’s deputies in Richmond County have charged a man with murder in the shooting death of an acquaintance at the suspect’s home.

The Daily Journal of Richmond County reports 40-year-old Robert David Erby II is accused of killing 59-year-old Michael Gene Cain early Monday morning inside Erby’s home.

Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr. said the men had been hanging out at Erby’s home since Sunday evening. Deputies said the men got into an argument and Erby began firing and killed Cain. The killing is Richmond County’s first homicide of 2014 and the most recent since 2012.

Erby is charged with an open count of murder and is being held without bond in the Richmond County Detention Center. It’s not known if Erby has an attorney.
