RALEIGH — Organizers of a 5k race which encourages female participants to dress like schoolgirls say they have canceled plans to hold a race in Raleigh.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the race scheduled for Aug. 9 was approved by the City Council in March.
Former Raleigh police captain and local race organizer Paula O’Neal told the council she questioned the message being sent due to the increasing problem of rape and violence against girls in schools and on college campuses.
On Thursday, Sexy Schoolgirl organizers told city officials they will pull their race out of Raleigh. An assistant city manager says organizers cited community controversy and a lack of early sign-ups as a factor in their decision.
The website says races are planned for Charlotte and Wilmington.
