RALEIGH — Allegations of partisanship and targeting lawmakers for defeat by retooling North Carolina’s political boundaries continued at the final round of public hearings on redistricting. But there was also an increasing chorus of speakers on reforming how the maps are drawn every decade.

A handful of speakers urged North Carolina legislators Monday to pass a bill approved by the House this year that would direct the General Assembly’s nonpartisan staff to draw districts for the Legislature and the state’s congressional delegation. The measure is now in the Senate.

The bill wouldn’t take effect until the next round of redistricting begins after the 2020 elections. Legislation supporters say the new mapmaking method would reduce political considerations in forming the boundaries.

Lawmakers are expected to approve maps by the end of next week.
