FAYETTEVILLE – A Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy has resigned after being charged with driving while impaired following an accident involving his personal car.

A statement from the sheriff’s office said 31-year old Rickey Caldwell was driving his vehicle when it went off the road and into a ditch, causing it to flip over and hit a tree.

The sheriff’s office said Caldwell was arrested by the N.C. Highway Patrol and taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center, where he registered a .14 blood-alcohol level, nearly twice the legal limit.

After he was tested, Caldwell submitted his resignation. He has been released from jail on a written promise to appear in court in October. A phone number listed for Caldwell was not in service, and it wasn’t known if he has an attorney.
