RALEIGH — North Carolina’s four previous poets laureate hope to meet with the governor about the process used to select the most recent person to hold the high-profile post.
Outgoing poet laureate Joseph Bathanti said Thursday he and the three previous poets laureate were pleased to hear Gov. Pat McCrory say he would review the process used to select Valerie Macon.
Macon is a disability examiner for the state who has self-published two books. In naming her, McCrory bypassed the typical process which involved the N.C. Arts Council.
A McCrory spokesman says a meeting with the four might be helpful.
Bathanti and the other poets laureate — Fred Chappell, Kathryn Stripling Byer and Cathy Smith Bowers — issued a statement Thursday saying that ignoring that process “has resulted in a disaster.”
