ASHEVILLE — There’s a parking controversy in Asheville.

It seems City Councilman Cecil Bothwell used his electronic parking pass to allow dozens of motorists to leave a county garage for free following the Mountain Moral Monday rally held in a park last Monday.

Area media outlets report he’s now received a $512 bill from Buncombe County. That’s $8 a vehicle for 64 vehiles. The county charges $8 for a lost ticket.

Bothwell says that after the rally, cars were backed up to the fourth level of the garage and people were having problems with the public pay station.

He says he’s not sure he will pay the $512. He says that’s extreme and says motorists would not have run up $8 in parking fees in the time they were in the garage.
