RALEIGH — A North Carolina college freshman has taken care of her tuition and fees after one try at the Carolina Cash 5 game.

Tiffany Lother of Rutherfordton played the game from the North Carolina Education Lottery for the first time last weekend. She and her mother had forgotten about their ticket purchases until Wednesday.

Lother said her mother won a prize on her ticket and said she should check her numbers. She said she looked it up online, screamed and ran downstairs.

Lother said she plans to use a portion of her winnings, which totaled $240,436 after taxes, to pay for her college education. She said she can now go to law school without putting the burden on her parents to foot the bill.
