HICKORY — Police in Hickory say a woman was killed when she wrecked her car after driving off from a traffic stop.

The Hickory Daily Record reports police said 39-year-old Crystal Annette Jones Port of Morganton was killed Wednesday night after her car crashed into a crane at a construction site in Long View.

According to police, an officer stopped Port near an intersection shortly after 11 p.m. When the officer asked the woman to turn off her engine and step out of the vehicle, she sped away.

As the vehicle entered Long View, it came upon construction at a bridge. Traffic cones, barrels and message boards divert traffic, and police say Port’s car struck several barrels before hitting the crane. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
