CHARLOTTE — Police have charged the mother of a 4-month-old girl who was not in a car seat when she was killed in a wreck in Charlotte with felony child abuse.
Investigators say the child was initially in a car seat, but 18-year-old Kayla Davis took her out so more people could fit in the car before the wreck Tuesday.
Authorities say the 2000 Nissan Altima was speeding and tried to pass another vehicle when it ran off the road, hit a utility pole and overturned. The baby was ejected and died, while the other five people in the car suffered minor injuries.
The car’s driver, 21-year-old Thabiti Pierre-Louis is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, reckless driving and several other charges. It wasn’t known if he or Davis had lawyers.
