CHARLOTTE — A North Carolina man is charged with killing his wife after being tracked down in South Carolina and returned to Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say 62-year-old Joseph Green Brown was arrested at a hotel in Charleston, S.C., late Friday. He was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail early Saturday. Jail records show he faces a charge of first-degree murder and has a court appearance scheduled Monday. It’s not known if he has an attorney.

Detectives allege on an arrest warrant that Brown killed his 71-year-old wife, Mamie Caldwell Brown. Police said they found her dead in her apartment Thursday night after being asked to check on the woman’s welfare. Officers found her lying on the floor of her apartment suffering from apparent trauma. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
