MARSHVILLE — The Union County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man in connection with two murders that investigators say happened nearly 25 years apart.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey said deputies arrested 61-year-old Eddie “Clyde” Helms outside his home Tuesday, about 10 miles northeast of Marshville and near the Anson County line.
Investigators accused Helms in the November 1988 shooting of John Terow Griffin III in the Anson County town of Peachland, and the August 2012 slaying of Charles Ronald Godwin in eastern Union County.
Cathey would not disclose the motive behind the two killings, but he said there were similarities in the cases and that both homicides involved anger and jealousy.
Helms is being held in the Union County jail without bond. Jail records didn’t say whether Helms has an attorney.
