BUXTON — The iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on North Carolina’s Outer Banks is being spruced up.

Painters will be applying new paint and sealant to the candy-striped lighthouse during the next few weeks. That’s done about every decade or so.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reports that a crew from H.I.S. Painting in Titusville, Florida, will roll about 455 gallons of paint and coatings onto the lighthouse.

They are applying a sealant, a primer coat and two finishing coats. Painters do the work on a scaffold suspended from the top of the seven-story lighthouse.
