RALEIGH – U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has returned to North Carolina to have emergency surgery on her eye.

Spokeswoman Amber Moon said Hagan left Washington on Thursday night and had the surgery Friday. She is recuperating, but expects to be back on her regular schedule in several days.

Moon said Hagan has had the condition for a while and it has steadily gotten worse. She put off the surgery for as long as she could so she could keep working in the U.S. Senate, but the conditioned worsened. Moon would not specify the problem Hagan was having with her eye.

Hagan is a Democrat in a tough re-election fight against Republican N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis.
