HICKORY — The former manager of a regional airport near Morganton has been given more time to report to prison for charges including embezzlement.

The Hickory Daily Record reported a federal judge gave Alex Nelson 60 days to report to a federal prison in West Virginia so he could take care of family matters. He once managed Foothills Regional Airport.

Nelson was sentenced in February to three years in federal prison for conspiracy to engage in public corruption, embezzlement and money laundering. He pleaded guilty to the crimes in September 2012.

He originally was supposed to report to prison April 8. His attorney says he doesn’t expect to have to seek an extension past June 7.
