DURHAM – Duke University’s new cancer center is ready to open its doors.
The Herald-Sun of Durham reported on Sunday that the Duke Cancer Institute is opening this week.
The $235 million facility is seven stories tall and has 267,000 square feet of space. It includes a rooftop garden, a radiation vault with seven-foot thick concrete walls and twice as many chemotherapy infusion bays.
The new center brings together different specialties and facilities from Duke’s 40 cancer divisions that had been scattered across the medical campus.
Officials say the cancer center is the first major component to be completed of a gigantic, $880 million building spree. A new hospital tower, medical pavilion and learning center are still under construction.
