RALEIGH — North Carolina’s commerce secretary during Gov. Beverly Perdue’s administration is preparing to run for Congress next year.

Democrat Keith Crisco filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission this week to form a campaign committee and identify himself as a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Renee Ellmers.

Crisco has been an Asheboro clothing elastic company executive and city councilman. He was the state’s top economic recruitment official for four years as secretary.

Ellmers is a second-term congresswoman already facing a GOP primary challenge in May from Frank Roche of Cary.
