MOUNT AIRY — A company that makes household, automotive and other cleaning products plans to hire 140 people to work in the manufacturing facility it plans to establish in a former furniture plant in Mount Airy.

Awesome Products owner L.D. Hardas said Friday that he hopes the plant will eventually employ at least 300 people.

Hardas' company is investing about $22 million in the venture, which includes buying the 540,000-square-foot Bassett Furniture plant and retooling it. It will serve first as a distribution center, with manufacturing operations added later.

The company was made eligible for up to $300,000 in performance-based incentives from the state's One North Carolina Fund and more than $540,000 from Surry County.
