RALEIGH – Life is returning to normal after overnight snow and ice prompted traffic accidents and school closings across North Carolina’s midsection and South Carolina’s Upstate.

Monday’s icy road conditions are blamed for one death coming amid a mild season.

A 3-year-old girl died in a crash on Interstate 74 in Surry County near Mount Airy. The family of four from Canada was in a Chrysler van when the driver lost control on ice on a bridge and the van slid into a pole.

About 4 inches of snow fell in the mountains of Ashe and Watauga counties on Sunday, around an inch in Alamance County, and a dusting further south in Charlotte.

Dozens of school districts from the mountains to the Research Triangle closed or delayed opening until roads cleared Monday.
